Teaching procedures
Step 1: Warming-up
1. Greetings.
2. Let’s guess.
Play a guessing game to check how much students know about wild animals. Have students guess what kind of animal it is according to their looks and qualities.
It is very large and walks slowly. (elephant)
It is large, strong and heavy with thick fur. (bear)
It looks very cute and lives only in China. (giant panda)
It is the king of the forest; many animals are afraid of it. (tiger)
Then lead into the topic.
Step 2: Presentation
1. Read the conversation for students and ask them to find out the main idea. Meanwhile, they need to fill in the chart on the blackboard.
2. Check the main idea with students: special things about wild animal. And then invite students to share their answers about the chart. (learn to work out, decide to fly, begin to save)
3. Ask students to observe the special things on the chart carefully, and find out the similarities among them. Invite a student to circle the similar part, such as “learn to work out”, “decide to fly” and “begin to save”
4. Conclude the form of infinitive (to do). Introduce the function and usage of it: the infinitive is often used after a verb and we can use the infinitive to express actions will happen in the near future.
Step 3: Practice
1. Mechanical drilling
Ask students to fill in the blanks with the correct form of verb. Here are some sentences:
(1) “My dream is _____(be) a teacher.”
(2) “I decide _____(study) hard.”
Then invite one student to write the answer on the blackboard. Check the answers together with students. (to be, to study)
2. Meaningful drilling
Describe pictures:
Show some pictures on the PowerPoint and ask students to describe them by using infinitive. For example, squirrels forget to find food.
Step 4: Production
Ask students to have a discussion about other animals’ special things. They can work in groups of 4 in 6 minutes. The teacher reminds them to use infinitive. During discussion, the teachers walk around and offer timely help. Then invite some groups to share in the front.
Step 5: Summary and Homework
Summary: summarize today’s lesson together with students. And ask students to protect wild animals in their daily life.
Homework: ask students to design a poster to call for wild animal protection and surf the Internet for more wild animals. They need to choose a kind of wild animal and introduce it using the infinitive.

I think grammar teaching is a very important part of English learning. Learning English is just like building a house.
